
Zion Lutheran Church is a historic landmark and pillar of the community, located at the corner of 5th and Market Streets in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. One of the oldest congregations in the region, our roots trace back to the very founding of Sunbury itself.

Our History
1772
The First Church in Sunbury
The original congregation erected a log schoolhouse and church building at Walnut Street and River Avenue — recognized as the first church building ever constructed within Sunbury.
1793
Growth and the “Organ Incident”
A new log church was built at Third and Church streets. When a Stall’s pipe organ was debuted in 1815, the sheer volume of the crowd gathered to hear it caused the church floor to collapse — a testament to the congregation’s popularity.
1921
The Present Landmark
The current grand Gothic-style structure was constructed using Indiana Limestone. One of the largest church buildings in northcentral Pennsylvania, it stands as a lasting tribute to the faith of those who came before us.
